Press Release for Abrahamic Reunion – Oct. 26th

A unique Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking event will be taking place on Sunday, October 26th. We are the Abrahamic Reunion, a group of Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Druze religious leaders working together since 2004 to re-claim religion as a source for peace.

In the aftermath of the summer Gaza-Israel war, and with Arab-Jewish tensions as worse as ever, the Abrahamic Reunion committed to creating monthly interfaith peace-building journeys to different parts of the Holy Land,  to re-build trust between the 'wounded Family of Abraham'.

During the Gaza conflict in July, Palestinians and Israelis came from Jerusalem to Nazareth for a tour and an interfaith Ramadan dinner at the 'Lights of Peace' Sufi Cener, 120 Arabs and Jews participated.  On September 14th, 70 Israelis and Palestinians came together for a journey with:  text study at the 'Tent of Satah and Hagar' in Faradis, a tour of Zichron Yaakov, the Bahai Gardens and Elijah's Cave in Haifa, and prayers for peace on the beach of Jizr az-Zarka.
Pictures and details of these events can be found on our Facebook page, “Abrahamic Reunion”, and on the web at: www.jerusalempeacemakers.org

Last night was a presentation by Avichayil on how there is a need for consensus which will allow us to come to conclusions from which we can build a coherent ideology. He began by explaining the difference between a logical and a spiritual solution. The logical solution spoke of the Federal Republic of the Holy Land which is administrated jointly by a Jewish and Muslim authorities. Jewish authorities have jurisdiction over the Jews and the Muslim authorities over the Muslims. All inhabitants in the Holy Land must have equal rights and political representation.

There is a large question of identity that needs to be dealt with on both the Jewish and Muslim side. We need to ask what a Jewish state really means. Is it a European nation state with Jewish decorations or a state with a Jewish majority. Or perhaps it should be a state that lives according to Jewish values. To answer these questions, Avichayil put forth the recommendation that the State of Israel formally recognize a Sanhedrin made up of all the groups of the Jewish people. It would function as a think tank which provides recommendations to the Knesset and the Supreme Court for how Israel should act so as to conform with Jewish values.

The question of Muslim identity is also of paramount importance. We discussed how Palestinian national identity is founded upon resistance to Zionism. It is not a force that builds but a force that encourages its people to destroy. This is why we must strengthen the true Islamic identity of Muslims in the Holy Land so that they can see interpretations that favor the Jewish people, living as Israelites, in their native land.

The spiritual solution, which I term the Zero State Solution, was proposed and discussed at length. Here a messianic vision was presented which entailed how things will look during the redemption. I spoke about how we need to formulate a solid plan for moving from the current State of Israel to the Federal Republic of the Holy Land and finally to the Kingdom of the Eternal where nation states are irrelevant.

Yehudah HaCohen brought up how Western thinking keeps us in a dualistic paradigm where we think that we must choose between the practical, realistic and logical solution (the Federal Republic) and the spiritual solution. Authentic Hebrew thinking (or as HaRav HaNazir David Cohen z"l would call it: Hebrew Auditory Logic), shows that we must understand the future as being able to encompass both solutions. The State of Israel in its current form and even the Federal Republic is the vehicle that takes us to our destination (the full redemption of Israel and then the entire world).

Yehudah saw the core issue as being that Palestinians do not care about a state and a flag which they view as being inherently colonialist. By virtue of our worshiping the flag with the prayer of a national anthem, they view us as being colonizers. We need to adopt their language of revolution. We can not be discouraged by how the majority (the masses) are not open to these ideas. After all, it is the power of minorities that drive history forward. This is why Yehudah focuses on speaking with Palestinians who are politically active in their national struggle. It is their hearts and minds which need to be opened to these ideas, not the masses.
