A positive development from the Visioning Interfaith Activism Conference which I facilitated on June 4th, 2015 at the Tantur Ecumenical Institute:
Praying Together In Jerusalem A Message from Fr. Russ McDougall and Peta Pellach Jones September 3rd, 2015
Several weeks ago, we participated in the Envisioning the Future workshop at Tantur during the Visioning Interfaith Activism in the Holy Land conference organised by the Abrahamic Reunion and the ICCI.
As a result of a brainstorming session, the two of us became convinced that the idea of praying together in Jerusalem--Christians, Muslims, Jews, and other people of faith, side-by-side--was not far-fetched, and that we should try to make this vision a reality. We believe that we can change the culture of Jerusalem and be agents for peace if we use the power of prayer--praying to the Wholly United One to assist us in achieving human unity.
The vision is not to merge our prayers or create a single prayer, but to allow us to each pray in her own way--alongside each other--and we want to create a movement to give people the opportunity to do just this.
Our first step has been to create a Facebook page - www.facebook.com/PrayingTogetherinJerusalem - so that people who share our beliefs can show their solidarity in a simple way, by just liking the page. Of course, we hope that you will ‘like’ us immediately and we also invite you to post any experience of shared prayers in Jerusalem that you have, to help build momentum. If you have photographs or testimonies of people praying together in Jerusalem, please send them to Prayingtogetherinjerusalem@gmail.com and we will post them on the page, or our website, jerusalemprayingtogether.wordpress.com.
In addition to expressing support and sharing what already exists, we hope that we will really create an active movement. We would like to begin with small groups of us saying our evening prayers together. If we gather for meetings or events, perhaps we could create the space for side-by-side prayer. We would like these efforts to culminate in a public event, leading to regular, public, side-by-side prayers.
We have chosen Thursday, 29th October at 5:00pm/17:00 to have our first public Praying Together in Jerusalem. Please save the date and start informing your various contacts and constituencies.
If you feel this is a worthwhile venture and would like to be part of the movement towards the public event, please let us know. We would love to hear your ideas as well as share our own in more detail.
Hoping you would like to be part of the new movement, "Praying Together in Jerusalem".
